I subscribe to Gilbert, the magazine of the American Chesterton Society, which is now in fact an official church association of the faithful known as “The Apostolate of Common Sense.” I love the insightful, fun-loving and timely collection of writings found therein, whether from GKC's (Gilbert Keith Chesterton) treasure house or from his contemporary fans. They always seem to find more than enough to give a useful look at today’s world.
The Holy Spirit was clearly trying to make an impression on us all that evening, deciding not to be subtle this time! It was really amazing. Sacraments usually don't have such external signs, but they are always powerful, like the power of a tiny seed that can one day be an orchard, as was mentioned in the homily. Where did you see God this past week?
I am excited to be the sponsor for my niece's Confirmation this week. I will get to travel back to my home parish for the event, which is always a blessing. I have not made it home much the past six months because we are trying to let mom and dad stay in a good, low-risk quarantine. I am looking forward to seeing the family again. About three weeks ago we were together for a family vacation.
As busy as we are with so many things pulling us and pushing us, it is easy to get swept away in our lives. If we don't live our lives on purpose, we can end up living them on accident. Sometimes this can yield drastic consequences, like hiking without a compass and finding yourself lost. Our faith, and our unique vocation, is a compass that the Lord gives us. Our parish has been working on its compass - trying to discover the voice of God speaking over and through the noise to a deeper calling.
