As a Nigerian priest presently studying and working in the United States, I often find myself comparing the church in Nigeria with the church in America. One of the many things I find interesting is the slight difference between how American and Nigerian Catholics go to confession.
From my experience, on average, American Catholics typically spend more time at the confessional than Nigerian Catholics. Americans tend to provide more details of their struggles with temptation and sin than Nigerians. What is, however, cheering is the high appreciation most American and Nigerian Catholics have for the sacrament.
Sitting at the confessional last Saturday at St Martin's Lugbe, Abuja-Nigeria, I thought of our wonderful family at St. Thérèse Little Flower Parish. The enthusiasm of parishioners of both parishes toward the sacrament is easily noticeable.
The sacrament of Reconciliation is beautiful. Most Catholics recognize and appreciate the beauty and spiritual benefits of this sacrament.
