Today’s readings may not sit well with the imagery we might have about Advent, preparing for the birth of Jesus and all the festivity that surrounds his coming. But these readings are crucial to a full understanding. It is about the kingdom of heaven, here and yet coming.
When we are told, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness [translate self-indulgence] and the anxieties of daily life,” will we be frightened by signs of the end time, whether we see those signs in floods, fires, pandemics, disease, massive migrations, violence, destruction of the climate, or in economic and social upheaval? Or will we have nurtured kingdom values during our time on earth and be prepared to humbly “stand before the Son of Man,” hopeful of hearing the words, “well done, good and faithful servant”?
It is incumbent upon Catholics and all Christians to be a shining light on the hill, to be faithful servants, by first living Jesus’ commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Let us embrace all of God’s creation with compassion and gentleness.
